Counter Reset
The counter is the most visible part of your kitchen. What sits on it shapes how you feel every time you enter the room.
If you don't use it daily,
it doesn't live on the counter.
This single rule, applied consistently, eliminates 80% of counter clutter. Every object on the counter is a visual decision — it costs attention. Make the counter earn every item it holds.
The allowed and the exiled
Use this guide to evaluate every item currently occupying your counter space.
✓ Counter-Worthy
- Coffee or tea maker (if used daily)
- Fruit bowl with seasonal produce
- Cutting board (if you prep at the counter daily)
- Knife block (near prep zone only)
- Dish drying rack (functional, near sink)
- Kettle (if daily use)
- A small tray or mat to corral items
× Off the Counter
- Toaster (unless used daily — and even then, consider a cabinet)
- Mixer, food processor, blender (cabinet storage)
- Paperwork, keys, mail — anything non-kitchen
- Decorative items that collect dust
- Duplicate tools (one spatula visible, not four)
- Condiment bottles (they live in the fridge or pantry)
- Empty jars and containers waiting to be used
How to clean
your counters
The daily counter wipe is the highest-impact minute in your kitchen reset. It removes bacteria, eliminates crumbs, and — most importantly — creates a visual signal that the kitchen is done for the day.
Use a clean microfiber cloth with a food-safe spray or diluted white vinegar. Work from the cleanest area to the dirtiest. Finish by drying the surface — a dry counter stays clean longer.

Cleaning by surface material
Natural Stone & Marble
Avoid acidic cleaners (vinegar, lemon). Use pH-neutral spray only. Seal annually. Dry immediately after contact with water or liquids.
Quartz & Engineered Stone
More forgiving than natural stone. Mild dish soap and warm water daily. Avoid harsh abrasives. Wipe spills immediately to prevent staining.
Stainless Steel
Wipe with the grain of the steel to avoid scratching. Use a dedicated stainless cleaner weekly to prevent water marks and restore shine.
Wood & Butcher Block
Oil monthly with food-safe mineral oil. Avoid soaking with water. Sanitize with diluted vinegar after cutting meat. Sand and re-oil if stained.
Laminate
Most durable for daily cleaning. Standard kitchen spray works well. Avoid scouring pads. Chip repairs should be addressed quickly to prevent water damage.
Ceramic Tile
Focus on the grout lines during weekly resets — they accumulate oils and bacteria. A grout brush monthly keeps them clean.
